#407 - Reading and Knowledge
Volume 1 - Prayers to Love God

Dear Father, may it never be said of me that I spend more time and energy accumulating knowledge about this world than I do serving the needs of others. Reading a good non-fiction book may be wrong for me when I should be helping my widowed neighbor rake her leaves. However, there are two reasons why I should be well read - It gives me opportunities to have extended conversations with people. There are only a few sentences that can be shared about the weather. However, if I'm well read on politics, theology, history, philosophy, sports, and science, I can connect in a variety of ways with people who need the love of God in their life. - Knowledge of what is going on in the world gives me opportunities to serve people in need. If I read that young women are being forced into sexual slavery in a foreign country, I might want to do something about that. It may cause me to donate money or volunteer my time to charities that fight sexual slavery around the world. Father, I ask that You help me to be knowledgeable of what is going on in this world. May that knowledge connect me in a meaningful way with those who need the hope of Jesus Christ. I pray for wisdom to share the love of God with others, wisdom that comes from confession, repentance, and the subsequent work of the Holy Spirit to teach me truths. Father, help me to spend more time gathering knowledge of how I can engage hurting people in this world and less time enjoying meaningless and useless entertainment. Amen.
