#665 - I've Been Asked to Keep a Secret
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor
Dear Father, it takes a level of spiritual and emotional maturity to handle a secret. It takes wisdom. It takes peace of mind and calmness of the spirit. Keeping a secret is heavy lifting for the soul. It's a marathon. The natural tendency of our hearts is to say, "look at me - look what I know." The natural tendency of our hearts is to have power over the person who told us the secret. It simply takes great character strength to be able to handle a secret. It also requires great understanding. What if the person has shared they are going to do something to hurt themselves or others or they are going to break the law? Can I keep silent? Would I become an accomplice to a crime or misdeed? Father, I need wisdom about this person's request for me to keep their secret. What do I do with it? How do I handle it? Father, from this point forward, help me to give people a disclaimer before they tell me their secret. You can tell me but I want You to know I will follow God's lead about what I do with Your secret. If God leads me to believe Your life is in danger, or the life of someone else is in danger, I may disclose Your secret to someone who can prevent a tragedy. If on the other hand, God does not lead me to believe there is imminent danger, I ask by His strength that I will fulfill my promise to keep Your secret between You and I. Amen.
