#736 - My Vote as a Citizen - Part 2
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor
Dear Father, I watch political debates and something seems wrong. Policy is more important than character. We are led to believe that the platforms, policies, and programs a politician espouses are more important than who they are in their soul. Father, why are we so blind? If the politician lacks integrity, what difference does it make what policy the politician has on ____________ (insert the environment, taxes, immigration, women's rights, gay marriage, the military, crime, or the economy)? If they lack integrity, they may be deceiving the voters with every word that comes out of their mouth. They may be saying things just to get elected. They may accuse their opponent of being dishonest. How do we know if they are being dishonest about their opponent's dishonesty? Father, give us political candidates who care more than anything else about character. - Give us political candidates who deeply value honesty. We can trust that they mean whatever they say. - Give us political candidates who deeply value compassion. We know that whatever policy they have will be for the good of people in need. - Give us political candidates who have peace and joy in their heart. They will long to create a society at peace and a society that is enjoying all that is good. - Give us political candidates who value wisdom. We know they will do everything they can to get a decision right. - Give us political candidates who are persevering. We know they will not surrender to moments of despair and weakness. - Give us political candidates who are gentle. They will not rush into conflict with foreign powers, politicians, staff, or citizens. - Give us political candidates who desire justice in the land. They will fight for what is right and defend those who are being wronged. - Give us political candidates who are hard-working. They will respect the demanding work of citizens across the country. - Give us political candidates whose convictions and principals are critically important to them. They will not be bought by special interests. - Give us political candidates who have overcome adversity. They will understand the suffering of the people in the land. - Give us political candidates who are humble. They will seek counsel from other advisors. - Give us political candidates who are hopeful. They will cast a vision for a better future for our nation. - Give us political candidates who are faithful to their loved ones. They will be faithful to the voter and the taxpayer. - Give us political candidates who can control their emotions and their words. They will be able to build trust with those who would otherwise oppose them. - Give us political candidates who are thankful. They will not let power get to their head. - Give us political candidates who appreciate others. They will be able to unite different communities. - Give us political candidates who are courageous. They will defend our country against foreign threats. They will take a stand for what is right even if it is not popular. - Give us political candidates who deeply mourn their own rebellion from God, doubting of Your character, and worshipping of false gods. They will inquire of the Lord and seek Your counsel, strength, and help. Father, where are such politicians going to come from? In our country? It seems impossible. However, nothing is impossible with You. Father, raise up politicians who value their character far more than their policies. May I support, encourage, and promote their candidacy. Amen.
