#403 - Thanksgiving Day
Volume 1 - Prayers to Love God
Dear Father, a young child is handed a piece of candy. His mother says, "Say thank You to Mr. Jones." "Thank You, Mr. Jones". Thanksgiving does not come naturally to us humans. We naturally consider ourselves entitled to the candy. We deserve it. If we don't have it, we are victims. If we are given it, well, we should have had it originally. The gift giver is no hero. They are someone who was late on a payment. The holiday of Thanksgiving seems like a mother reminding her young child to be thankful. Why do we need a day to remind us to be thankful, Father? Shouldn't we be thankful every day? Why not a national holiday to celebrate integrity? Why not a national holiday to celebrate courage? Why not a national holiday to celebrate self-control? Father, we need these character traits every day. We need to be thankful every day and not just once a year. Father, may this Thanksgiving Day be about every attribute that our character should have. Let's look in the mirror and make sure we are thankful today. Let's also look in the mirror and check that we are loving, joyful, peaceful, faithful, compassionate, merciful, generous, gentle, kind, and persevering. It's Character Check day. Amen.
