#51 - My Heart is Bored with Worship
Volume 1 - Prayers to Love God

Dear Father, there have been times in my life when I was invited to take part in something I wasn't all that excited about. A party at school. A weekend retreat. Dinner with the odd family down the street. "Uh, sure, sure, I'll do it. If I have to." Deep down inside we are screaming "I don't want to do this." Father, we can't fake enthusiasm, any more than a call center representative of the cable company can fake enthusiasm on a support call. If we don't feel it, it shows. Father, I've gone into church worship services when I could tell many of the people were bored. They were itching to leave. Their minds were on the mulch that needed to be put around the garden or the problem employee they needed to reprimand at work the next day. Where was their enthusiasm? Where was their passion? Where was the excitement? Didn't the God of the universe send His son to die on the cross for their sins? Isn't that amazing? Isn't that freeing? Doesn't that make them want to dance? Make them want to shout? Apparently not. They don't get excited about spiritual things. Father, guess who is the number one person guilty of the lack of enthusiasm? Me. I'm describing myself. This is how I respond to worship. I act like I'm flipping channels, trying to find something on television to watch. I'm not excited about worship because I'm not excited about You. Other things are more exciting to me than You. I care more about what others in the pew next to me think of me than I care about displaying a thankful spirit. Father, when I'm low energy in worship, I tell those around me it's ok to be unenthusiastic about their faith. Many of us do deeply love You while being reserved in worship service. That's fine. However, may it not be said of us that we are reserved in church because we lack enthusiasm for You. Help me to show passion for You every hour of my life. Amen.
