Prayers
#92 - Sarcasm
Volume 1 - Prayers to Love God
Dear Father, we tend to think that sarcasm is not good. We often hear sarcasm from the mouths of arrogant people who take pleasure in criticizing and belittling others. Their intention is to domineer or humiliate another person. However, You are often sarcastic in Your Word. You mock our rebellion from You. When humans think they are their own god, You challenge them to prove it. Did You create the universe? Do You hold everything together by the power of Your word? Do You have the wisdom I have? Can You stop the rain from falling? Can You change the course of a storm? Can You create a baby in the womb? Can You create a brain like the one I gave You? Can You stop Yourself from dying? Do You direct the planets and stars and tell them what to do? Father, I can hear Elijah's sarcasm when he spoke to the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Sarcasm is warranted when we challenge anyone's belief that someone or something other than You is God. There is a place for sarcasm when anyone praises a false god or a worthless idol. Father, sarcasm can be a mighty powerful tool when it mocks the rebellion of mankind from You. However, may I use sarcasm carefully. May it be directed at those who defy You deliberately and arrogantly. May I treat those who are searching for You with a broken and contrite spirit with words of compassion and grace. Amen.
