#564 - I'm Separated from My Spouse
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor
Dear Father, my spouse and I are separated. Our relationship deteriorated so much that we could no longer tolerate each other. We could no longer tolerate the constant fighting and bickering. We could no longer tolerate the emotional distance. We were two individuals living in separate corners of the home, regrettably meeting in the hallway from time to time. We determined that life apart was better than life together. However, we have not divorced. Maybe we are thinking that time apart can heal our wounds. I know that is foolish thinking. You don't overcome the fear of flying by avoiding airplanes. You don't overcome the fear of roller coasters by avoiding roller coasters. Similarly, you don't heal a relationship by avoiding it. We must communicate. We must compromise. We must negotiate. We must learn to love and respect one another. Father, give me a new heart, a heart that wants to reconcile. Change me. Soften me. Humble me. I confess my rebellion and I repent. I surrender to You in the name of Jesus Christ, who died for my rebellion. Now, fill me up with the fruits of the Holy Spirit so that I can show my spouse a new kind of love. Father, my spouse may not be willing to change their mind. In their mind, the separation may simply be a stepping stone to divorce. Father, I may not be able to stop the inevitable termination of our marriage. However, if I make every effort to seek forgiveness and reconciliation, I will not have any reason to feel guilt once the divorce goes through. My children will know that I tried everything to save the family. Father, help me to give my best effort to reunite with my spouse. Amen.
