#580 - Premarital Counseling
Volume 2 - Prayers to Love Our Neighbor

Dear Father, my fiance and I are scheduled to receive pre-marital counseling. It's kind of routine, something to check off on the list of things to do, like ordering flowers or choosing the venue for the reception. We rush home from work, grab a bite to eat, hurry to the church, listen to the pastor say a few things, and then we go home to relax in front of the television. We will have a good marriage. We will have a nice house. Nice jobs. Beautiful children. We will even have a nice dog. We have the sunset and the horse ordered for us to ride off into happily-ever-after. However, the reality is that marriage can be a blessing but it can also be a total disaster (spelled d-i-v-o-r-c-e). Father, protect us in our naivete. We need to break free from our assumption our marriage will be inspiration for a romance novel. Human beings grow emotionally and spiritually through hardship and adversity. The same is true of relationships. We are going to have tough times because You want us to grow closer to You. It is in tears that we surrender and turn our lives over to You. What gets us through such hardship? Jesus Christ must be at the center of our relationship. We must both surrender our lives to You. Neither one of us can be our own god. Prayer and studying of Your Word together must be as frequent as sharing a meal together. We must understand that love is a choice to be faithful - it is not simply a Hallmark Channel romantic feeling. May both of us love You more than we love each other. When we love You the most, we will love what You love - our spouses. Father, may we find a pre-marital counselor who believes these things and helps both of us get our heart ready for commitment through the upcoming storms of married life. Amen.
